Engineering Hosts First-ever HS Senior
Recruitment Event
In an effort to attract high-ability high school seniors, the College of Engineering hosted its first-ever student recruitment event on October 25 at USF CAMLS in downtown Tampa. The event showcased the high quality education and outstanding learning opportunities available at USF to prospective engineering students (freshman class 2017) and their parents.
It’s an Electrical Engineering and Art Design Mash-up
The union of arts and engineering has emerged as a significant intellectual, commercial and educational concept, sparking creative new programs across the globe. The certificate is open to all undergraduate students who are interested exploring the overlapping areas of electrical engineering technology and the visual arts. Innovative products, and innovative productions, are original and have value because of their form and function – think iPhone, Tesla and Avatar. The goal of the four-course certificate is to provide a path of increasing exposure to and understanding of this powerful combination with intensive hands-on experience.
Roboticon Takes Over USF Sun Dome
The College of Engineering and the University of South Florida co-sponsored the 2016 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Roboticon event October 8-9. Approximately 800 Florida high- and middle-school students registered, including the Red Hurricane team from China. It was a great opportunity to showcase the College’s engineering labs to students who could be future Engineering Bulls!

National Science Foundation Provides $1.5 Million Grant for Students in Technology-related programs
As part of a grant from the National Science Foundation the University of South Florida will receive nearly $1.5 million in student scholarships to remove the financial barriers to student success and increase the number of graduates in the key IT-related disciplines of computer science, computer engineering, and information technology.
Historically, science, technology, engineering and mathematics – or STEM – degrees take longer to finish than other majors. In some cases, students run out of financial aid before they are able to graduate. With this in mind, some of the scholarships are aimed at preventing students who are close to completing their degrees from being derailed by financial pressures.
Professors Ken Christensen and Rafael Perez were the co-PI on the grant.
Three Engineering Alumni Join the Faculty
Sandy Pettit, PE ’94 BSCH, ’10 MCHE, ’14 PhD has joined the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering as an Instructor II.
Isabela Moura ’12 PhD has joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering as an Instructor I.
Alexandro Castellanos ’06 PhD has joined the Department of Electrical Engineering as an Instructor.
COE Launches 10-year Strategic Plan
The new 10-year strategic plan for engineering is titled Engineering Lives for the Better. The College has created the hashtag #EngineeringLivesForTheBetter.
You will see this more frequently and we encourage alums to use it in their social media posts associated with the College of Engineering.
RACING TO SAVING LIVES IN CENTRAL AMERICA
She was 25 years old and it was thought that her best years, were behind her. The faithful bus that belonged to the Society of Automotive Engineers student group, the USF Racing team to be exact, used to transport students and a Formula-style race car to competitions throughout the United States, was in bad shape and in need of repair. The decision was made to dispose of her.
