SP/COM Society Meeting

TITLE:Codes for Detection and Correction of Errors in Computer/VLSI Memories

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, February 17, 1998, 6:30 pm
LOCATION:TECO Data Center, 1898 Nick Nuccio Parkway, Ybor City
SPEAKER: Dr. Murali Varanasi

SUMMARY:

Single error correcting and double error detecting codes have been used extensively in computer memories for enhancing reliability. However, in VLSI memories, errors occur in clusters, i.e., several successive positions may be in error. In the last ten years control of such errors, called memory package errors, has received considerable attention. In this presentation, codes for detection and correction of package errors will be discussed. In particular, codes capable of detection and correction of multiple errors in a byte-oriented memory will be presented, along with a comparison of best codes for this purpose.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Murali Varanasi received B.S.(Physics) and B.S.(Electronics Engineering) from Madras Institute of Technology, India. He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Varanasi served from 1972-1979 in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Old Dominion Universty, Norfolk Va. Since 1980, he is on the faculty of Computer Science and Engineering department at the University of South Florida.

Dr. Varanasi was elected a Fellow of the IEEE for his contributions to Computer Fault Tolerance and Computer Science and Engineering education.
