As part of her NASA Space Technology Research Fellowship, mechanical engineering graduate student Kaitlin Lostroscio,
is spending the break between semesters at Johnson Space Center (JSC) collecting biomechanics data on a test subject
using an exercise device while connected to the ARGOS (Active Response Gravity Offload System) simulating micro-g
conditions. This research will help develop countermeasures that will allow astronauts to stay healthy during long
term exploration missions. Her faculty advisor, Dr. Stephanie Carey, spent a few days touring JSC, presenting USF
capabilities and research and helping with the data collection. Dr. Carey also was able to try out the ARGOS system
and learned about the latest NASA research and technology which she will share with students during her Bioastronautics
course. Les Quiocho, a senior robotics engineer at JSC and Kaitlin’s NASA Research Collaborator, hosted the Visiting
Technologist Experience. Photo credits: Les Quiocho.
